No Child Left Behind law forces 2 Davis schools to offer transfers

Beginning today, parents of students at Vae View and South Clearfield elementary schools can apply to transfer their children to other schools under the federal No Child Left Behind law.

The two Davis County schools are required to offer transfers because they did not meet federal standards for "adequate yearly progress" on state tests in language arts and math in 2003 and 2004.

District officials aren't sure how many parents will take advantage of the transfer option, which also includes district-paid transportation.

"This is uncharted territory," district spokesman Chris Williams said. "Even though the feds say these two schools didn't make AYP, we don't think any schools are failing."

South Clearfield students can attend Antelope, Bluff Ridge, Hill Field, Holt or Wasatch elementary schools. Vae View students can attend Adams, Crestview, East Layton, King, Lincoln, Mountain View, Sand Springs or Whitesides elementary schools.

South Clearfield and Vae View principals are sending notes home to alert parents to their options. Application packets are available at the schools and on the district's Web site by clicking on "school choice" at http://www.davis.k12.ut.us/district/nclb/compliance/.
