Farr West man identified as avalanche victim

The snowmobiler who died Thursday in a northern Utah avalanche has been identified as Kyle Douglas Swayngim, of Farr West. The 27-year-old Weber County man was caught in a snow slide about 11 a.m. near Eccles Peak, about 30 miles northeast of Ogden. Fellow snowmobilers dug Swayngim from the snow within minutes of the slide. But he died, apparently from trauma associated with hitting a tree while being swept down the mountain, according to the Rich County Sheriff's Office. Swayngim became the eighth person to die in an avalanche this winter season, the deadliest in recorded Utah history.

Provo man sentenced to jail for groping incident

A Provo man who patted down two teenage girls last year while impersonating a police officer has pleaded no contest to reduced charges. Travis Newell, 24, was charged with felony counts of forcible sexual abuse. He settled the case by entering pleas to misdemeanor charges of sexual battery and impersonating an officer. Newell was sentenced to 18 months in jail by 4th District Judge Claudia Laycock.

Teens charged with bringing gun to school

Two 15-year-old boys from Clinton and a 16-year-old boy from Layton have been charged with possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds in connection with a Feb. 24 gun incident at Northridge High School, The Standard-Examiner reported. A court hearing for the 16-year-old and one of the 15-year-olds is scheduled for Monday, the paper reported. All three boys, as well as the 15-year-old student who brought the gun on campus, were suspended from school after a school resource officer found the handgun in the boy's waistband and bullets in his pocket.

Boy hospitalized after car hit him near school

A 14-year-old boy was hospitalized with a fractured leg and an injured jaw Thursday night after being hit by a car two blocks from Olympus Junior High School. The collision occurred about 6 p.m. near Murray-Holladay Road and Viewmont Street, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Paul Jaroscak. The boy apparently stepped into the street without looking. The boy was transported to a hospital by helicopter. No citations were issued.

Bail hearing scheduled for Logan shooting suspect

A man who allegedly shot and killed another man Sunday at Logan's Willow Park will appear in 1st District Court for a bail hearing April 14. Mynor Armando Ardon-Aguirre, 23, is charged with first-degree felony murder in the death of 19-year-old Oscar Arrieta-Simon, of Hyrum, who was shot multiple times in the torso. Ardon-Aguirre is being held without bail at the Cache County Jail. A man who allegedly brandished a knife during the altercation, Ruben Alfonso Paz-Flores, 19, has been charged with aggravated assault and obstructing justice.

Man charged with lewdness on five occasions

A 29-year-old man was charged Friday with exposing himself to children on five occasions in January and February in Taylorsville. The Taylorsville man faces five counts of lewdness involving a child, all class A misdemeanors. According to documents in 3rd District Court, the man drove up to children as young as 10 three times and exposed himself. On Feb. 10, the man allegedly sat down at Bennion Elementary School and touched himself. When three children saw him and ran away, he got up and followed them for a while, according to the court documents. The man also exposed himself to three children who had stopped to play at a park on the 4900 South block of 1950 West, according to the documents.

Propane believed cause of cabin explosion

Propane was believed to be behind an explosion Thursday that destroyed a cabin near Panguitch Lake in Garfield County. The cabin exploded about 7 a.m., causing damage to other cabins, according to the Garfield County Sheriff's Office. Nobody was injured. The explosion remained under investigation Friday.

West Jordan fight ends in stabbing; victim is alert

A 40-year-old man was taken to the hospital Friday night with wounds to his chest, arm and ear after he was stabbed during a fight in West Jordan. The victim, whose name was not released Friday night, was alert, conscious and breathing at the scene. The victim and the man suspected of stabbing him are acquaintances, and they had arranged to meet at the residence on the 3100 West block of 9340 South, said West Jordan police Capt. Gary Cox. The man's alleged attacker hadn't been arrested yet Friday.
