The Capitol Complex's new underground parking garage won't be left empty when lawmakers are out of session, but legislators will get 24 reserved spots just in case they stop by to do some work.

The Legislature's Management Committee decided Tuesday to grant 60-plus spots to executive branch employees in the garage when the Legislature is not meeting.

Since this year's legislative session, much of the garage has been empty while state employees fought for spaces in one parking lot. That created angst among some state workers as another main parking lot has been closed while the complex's Archives Building is torn down, leaving state workers with fewer spaces than ever.

Lawmakers, though, under the policy adopted Tuesday, will retain 24 spots in case some of the 104 legislators have a meeting at the Capitol Complex. And several spots will be taken up as construction starts on a new pump house for a fountain being installed on the plaza above the garage.
