Use drought-tolerant plants, less water and recycle. It sounds like the spring mantra from organizations that promote "green" living.

Try the Salt Lake County mayor's office, which wants to implement these methods and more in an effort to create environmentally sound policy.

For more ideas, the mayor's office is calling on county employees to volunteer for a countywide task force. The plan will be presented to the County Council today..

The best ideas, including how to use less paper and increase building and fleet efficiency, will come from the employees in those areas, says Deputy Mayor Karen Suzuki-Okabe.

"Plus," she says, "it makes everybody in the county sensitive to being more environmentally friendly."

Suzuki-Okabe says greener guidelines will also save tax money, but the amounts will be unknown until the changes are made.
