A 14-year-old girl was hit in the chin and right arm with bullet shrapnel when a party near 3300 South and 300 West turned violent Sunday morning. The girl checked into St. Mark's Hospital at about 5 a.m., where she was treated for superficial wounds and released, South Salt Lake police Sgt. Dwayne Ruth said. Investigators reported that an unknown assailant fired six shots from a .380 handgun outside a neighborhood garage party. A motive has not been determined and police aren't sure if it was gang-related, Ruth said. No other injuries were reported and no arrests had been made in the case.
Man killed, other injured when car plunges into river
A Highland man was killed and another man was injured when the car they were in plunged into the American Fork River on Sunday morning. The crash was reported at about 1:30 a.m. near Timpanogos Cave on state Route 92. The Highland man was identified as 22-year-old Austin Jay Humphries. Utah Highway Patrol troopers found Humphries still in the 1995 Mercury Tracer, which was upside down in the river, UHP Sgt. Greg Willmore said. He died at the scene. The river flow was high and heavy at the time of the crash. The passenger, 21-year-old Taylor C. Ellis, of Alpine, was found outside of the car about one-half mile from the crash. He was taken to American Fork Hospital with head and arm injuries. He is expected to recover.
73-year-old man dies, wife injured in one-car crash
A 73-year-old North Ogden man died and his wife was injured Saturday when he lost control of his car and slid into a fire hydrant and power pole. The crash occurred shortly before 6 p.m. near the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Seventh Street, Ogden police Lt. Mark Acker said. Joseph Christiansen was flown to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Eyewitnesses told police the right front tire on Christiansen's car blew out, sending the car into the curb twice. The car then hit a fire hydrant, flipping the car onto the driver's side and causing it to slide into a power pole. Joseph's wife, Billie Christiansen, was also in the car. She suffered a broken arm in the crash and was flown to McKay-Dee Hospital. It took emergency crews about 90 minutes to extricate the couple from their car, Acker said.
Police release name of teen found dead in Draper park
Police have released the name of a teenager whose body was found in Draper last week. Investigators say Zachary Martinez died of a drug overdose while partying with friends in West Jordan on Friday night. Panicked by his death, the group left his body in a park at the end of Steep Mountain Road. Results of an autopsy are pending.
