Attack compares senator to terrorist

A far right-wing group is comparing Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, to Osama bin Laden in a new flier that says: "Not all terrorists wear turbans."

The flier from Accountability Utah said that Stephenson uses his position as president of the Utah Taxpayers Association "to cover his contributing role in weakening America."

The flier, being distributed in Stephenson's district around Sandy and Draper, attacks him for voting for Senate Bill 227, which would void driver licenses for non-U.S. citizens and provide them a "driving privilege card" that wouldn't be acceptable as government identification.

"Under the pretense of this reform, this legislation continues to allow al-Qaida operatives to obtain Utah driver's licenses and roam freely in our communities," the flier says.

The group has often criticized elected leaders on its Web site, even handing out "pink slips" to some who they say should be fired by voters. Comparing a senator to a terrorist is beyond tactics the group has used before in its political advocacy.

The flier was discussed by disgusted senators Thursday in a Republican caucus. But Stephenson isn't concerned. "If it came from a credible group I'd worry about it," he said. "This is a ragtag group of radicals who forgot to take their meds."

Daniel Newby, a volunteer with Accountability Utah, says the group decided to put out the flier because Stephenson and others "have been supporting policies that support terrorism."

"It was time to expose Stephenson's record," Newby said. He added that the bin Laden comparison was not egregious because Stephenson is contributing to a society that gives incentives to undocumented workers.
