WASHINGTON - A U.S. Senate panel Wednesday cleared bills to transfer federal park land to Beaver County, study additions to the four historic wagon trails that pass through Utah and authorize spending $8.8 million to build a central curation center for Dinosaur National Monument in Vernal. All three bills cleared the full Senate last year but failed to become law due to inaction by the U.S. House. The measures were reintroduced by Utah Republican Sens. Bob Bennett and Orrin Hatch last month and the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee sent them to the full Senate on a voice vote. The Beaver County measure would save Minersville State Park from demolition by transferring ownership of the federal tract to the county along with authorization to sell or develop portions of the land to offset operating costs. The trails legislation would require the Interior Department to study the suitability of adding new variants to the routes of the Oregon, Mormon Pioneer, California and Pony Express national historic trails. The Vernal dinosaur museum measure would gather paleontological and prehistoric cultural artifacts from the park straddling Utah and Colorado in one location for research, preservation and public viewing. - Christopher Smith
