Suspicious package causes partial State Street closure

One block of State Street was closed for a couple of hours Saturday after a Matheson Courthouse security guard reported he found a suspicious package. At about 2 p.m., bomb technicians were called to investigate a duct-taped bag, which the guard saw on the backseat of a parked car, police said. The suspicious package, about the size of a bread box, turned out to be a 10-pound bag of rock salt. The car's driver, who was tracked down by Salt Lake City police, said he uses the bag for physical training. State Street, between 500 and 600 South, was reopened about 4 p.m. - Lisa Rosetta

Two pedestrians hit by cab at Alta Ski Resort

Two people walking alongside the road in Little Cottonwood Canyon on Saturday night were struck by a Ute Taxi cab as it attempted to make a right turn into an Alta Ski Resort parking lot. At 7:25 p.m., a motorist flagged down Alta Marshal's Office Sgt. Mike Morey, who found the couple lying in the snow, he said. The woman was flown to LDS Hospital where she was in serious condition, while the man was taken by ambulance to the University of Utah Medical Center. Both people are in their mid-30s and are from out of state. - Lisa Rosetta

Teen shoots child in eye after snowball fight, police say

A 14-year-old who police say shot another child in the eye with a BB gun after a snowball fight Friday afternoon is expected to be referred to juvenile court. A snowball fight broke out around 2:30 p.m. in the 900 North block of Star Crest Drive (1840 West). The 14-year-old, after he was hit with a snowball, went into his house, retrieved a BB gun and shot the 12-year-old in the corner of his right eye, police said.

Unmasked man robs bank branch in Midvale

A bank robber waited in line with several other patrons just after 4 p.m. Friday before stealing an undisclosed amount of cash from a Zions Bank branch in Midvale. The robber handed a note to the teller demanding money, police said. The man indicated he had a weapon, but nobody saw one, police said. The man is described as being in his 20s or 30s, 5-feet-6 or 7 and having a medium build. His face wasn't covered; he wore a light-colored, heavy jacket and a beanie cap. Anyone with information about the man is asked to call police at 840-4000.

Three arrested, 15 handguns recovered after search

Utah County sheriff's detectives and Draper police officers have recovered about 15 handguns and arrested three people. On Wednesday west of Utah Lake, a Utah County sheriff's deputy stopped a rental truck, containing a safe, which had been cut open. The safe had been stolen from a storage shed in Draper on Sunday, police said. Draper police questioned the person who rented the truck. Based on information from that interview, police served a search warrant in Sandy on Thursday where they recovered the handguns, police said.

Two Californians face burglary charges in Cedar City

Two Los Angeles men were booked Friday into the Iron County Correctional Facility on suspicion of burglary and theft of tools from four construction trailers near the new Cedar City airport terminal. Police Lt. David Holm said the van the men were traveling in was stopped for a traffic violation on Interstate 15 about 12:30 a.m. During a search of the van, police recovered $22,000 in construction tools. Holm said the men, ages 20 and 19, each face four felony counts of burglary and four felony counts of theft, in addition to trespassing and possession of stolen property.

Orem man arrested on suspicion of sodomizing boy

Orem police arrested a 40-year-old man Thursday morning on suspicion of sodomizing his 13-year-old foster son. The man was booked into jail on suspicion of 10 first-degree felony counts of sodomy of a child, said Orem police Lt. Bruce Wilkins. The man's wife also ran a day care at their home in southeast Orem, and investigators were trying to determine whether any of those children may have been victimized, Wilkins said.

Ninth DUI sends West Valley City man to prison

A West Valley City man with a record of eight prior drunken-driving convictions went to prison on Friday for his ninth DUI. Rudy Lopez, 48, pleaded guilty as charged to a third-degree felony after police last caught him driving with a blood-alcohol level nearly four times Utah's legal limit. Third District Judge Leslie Lewis told Lopez that given his history, prison was the only option. DUIs are misdemeanors until a defendant has two or more prior convictions in a 10-year period.
