Many things can happen between the start and the end of the legislative session.

That's what Weber State University officials were hoping Monday as the committee over new building construction turned down a campus renovation project.

The project - financed by a $20 million revenue bond and backed by student fees - was turned down Monday by the Capital Facilities and Administrative Services Appropriations Subcommittee.

Rep. Brent Goodfellow, D-West Valley City, a committee member who was away when the votes were counted, said that Weber State's project is still on the table.

"It's still early in the session . . . and a lot can happen," Goodfellow said.

The project - to be financed with a $20 million revenue bond backed by student fees - involves repair and renovation of the Shepherd Union Building.

It would add an additional 12,000 square feet to the building that houses the campus bookstore and serves as a student hub.

The Capital Facilities budget committee signed off on several other higher-education projects.

It gave Snow College the OK to go forward in building a new $5 million privately funded football stadium. Panel members also approved three privately funded University of Utah construction projects - a hospital expansion, an addition to a social work building and a new humanities building.

Later in the session, the committee will evaluate several other campus building projects, including renovation of the U.'s Marriott Library.

For now: "It's still early in the session," one legislator says
