While making clear it is not a priority, Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. called for the state to re-examine the private-club system, which requires membership to be served an alcoholic beverage.

He also said Friday that he wants to find a way to simply explain the state's liquor laws, which have bar owners, customers and tourists confused.

"In other words, couple the real changes that have been made with an understanding in the marketplace," Huntsman said during a news conference at KUED Channel 7.

His statements were well-received by Tom Barberi, local radio celebrity and outspoken advocate for changing Utah's liquor laws.

"We all know that liquor laws are the third-rail of politics in Utah, but the governor is courageous enough to know that this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed," he said.

Huntsman asked for Barberi's input as part of his post-election transition team and Barberi complied with a host of recommendations.
