Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has named Tani Pack Downing as new executive director of Workforce Services, the state's social program department.

Downing has served seven years as associate general counsel to the Legislature. She also has worked as general counsel for Workforce Services and most recently chaired the department's appeals board.

Her new appointment requires confirmation by the Senate.

"Tani Pack Downing has already proven her ability and skills within the Department of Workforce Services," Huntsman said in a statement. "Her leadership in such an important department will be heavily relied upon in my administration."

While working for the Legislature, Downing drafted bills and provided legal advice on various issues, including public utilities, information technology, taxes, the judiciary and natural resources.

Notably, Downing was the author of several bills dealing with concealed weapons sponsored by Sen. Michael Waddoups, R-Taylorsville.
