Republican delegates voted in a special caucus Saturday to fill two vacancies in the Legislature created when Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. named his Cabinet earlier this month. Huntsman tapped Sen. Leonard Blackham, of Moroni, to take control of the Agriculture Department, and Rep. Mike Styler, of Delta, to head the Natural Resources Department. Those appointments left their legislative seats open. Republicans selected Darin Peterson, a rancher from Nephi and a former state representative, to fill Blackham's spot Saturday in a runoff vote at Snow College. Peterson sought Blackham's senate seat in the last election, narrowly losing in the primary. Richard W. Wheeler, a vice president at Snow College, was voted to fill Styler's seat. Peterson and Wheeler are to meet with Huntsman on Monday. He must certify their appointments before they can participate. But Huntsman has to wait until the Senate confirms Blackham and Styler for their new posts. The Senate is scheduled to take action on Cabinet appointees Monday afternoon. - Matt Canham
