Huntsman was reminded that the man, who often was seen outside Huntsman's campaign headquarters, bet the Republican candidate he would win by a landslide.
When Huntsman, a multimillionaire, tried to pay up, however, he found he had no money in his wallet. He had to borrow $2 from a bystander. Then, when the man asked Huntsman to sign one of the bills, he had to borrow a pen to oblige.
Speaking of bets: If you log on to Betcom Sportsbook, an online betting service based in Costa Rica, and lay down $100 on Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, to be President Bush's first U.S. Supreme Court appointment, you could win a cool $1,200 in return.
Those are the odds the service is giving for Hatch, a long shot, to be Bush's first pick, according to the Dec. 20 edition of the National Law Journal.
Bad timing: Murray resident Mark Wheatley recently was pulled over by a West Valley City police officer for speeding but was cited for "not updating his driver license."
Wheatley has a restriction on his license stating he needs corrective lenses. He wasn't wearing glasses or contacts, but informed the officer he had undergone Lasik surgery. So the cop gave him a $40 ticket for not having his license updated to reflect the change.
Too bad Wheatley, a newly elected representative from District 35, got the ticket in December instead of January, when members of the House and Senate are not ticketed for violations during the legislative session. That despite past instances of which we have written when lawmakers have been spotted going 20-30 mph over the speed limit in full view of radar-armed police officers.
Correction: In our "heroes among us" column Monday, we wrote that Aramark, a vendor for the Salt Lake County Jail's commissary, treated inmates to gift bags for Christmas. Actually, the Prisoner Services Unit at the jail purchased the items in the gift bags with profits generated through commissary sales. The company involved was Keefe Commissary, not Aramark. Aramark will become the commissary provider next month.
