Leavitt's track record in Utah

During his 10-plus years in office, Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt oversaw sweeping changes to the state's welfare programs and child welfare system, scoring some hits and some misses. Following is a sample:

l Welfare caseloads were reduced by 52 percent.

l The jobless rate fell from 4.6 percent to low of 3 percent, but rose again to 6 percent.

l Utah's poverty rate rose from 8.4 percent of the population to 9.4 percent.

l The number of child welfare workers doubled from 300 to 600 during Leavitt's first year in office.

l About 330,000 more adults and 72,000 children have health insurance, but 200,000 Utahns remain uninsured.
