SANDY - Wait up, Wal-Mart. Sandy officials have given a reluctant OK for a referendum petition on a controversial zoning decision that would allow the big-box retailer on the suburb's gravel pit site. Save Our Communities, the group organizing the petition drive, has until Jan. 7 to collect 9,500 signatures. If the names are certified as registered voters, the zoning decision could wind up on November's ballot. "Our chances are excellent," said Gary Forbush, who is helping distribute 95 booklets with room for 100 signatures apiece. A 5-2 vote by the City Council last month paved the way for The Boyer Co. to build a Super Wal-Mart, a Lowe's and a smattering of restaurants and shops on a 100-acre gravel pit near 9000 South and 1000 East. Though the referendum is moving forward, Sandy spokesman Ryan Mecham suspects the feud ultimately will be decided in court. "We're very concerned that this is subject to legal challenge," Mecham said. - Derek P. Jensen
