PROVO - Fairfield now has leaders to go with its soon-to-be status as Utah County's 24th city.

By a 2-0 vote Tuesday, Utah County commissioners appointed retired Army officer Lynn Gillies as mayor of the town 15 miles west of Lehi.

They named Michael Burch, Wayne Taylor, David Hansen and RL Panek to the Town Council.

Utah County Clerk/Auditor Kim Jackson administered the oath of office to the five men.

"You've now been sworn in. That gives the public official notice that you can now be sworn at," joked Commissioner Jerry Grover.

"We might as well get a governing body up and running so we can pass off this responsibility and let them suffer," added fellow Commissioner Steve White.

All kidding aside, the Fairfield Five are taking their new duties seriously and acknowledge they face a tall task. First: File articles of incorporation within seven days to the Lieutenant Governor's Office, which then has 10 days to certify them. Once that happens, the town of 150 becomes official.

Gillies, who served two tours as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, acknowledges a little trepidation with his new title. Still, the new mayor says he is up to the challenge.

"I'm excited at the prospect of developing a new town," said Gillies, who wore his Army flight jacket for Tuesday's ceremony. "It's going to be a big challenge."
