Voters kept 37 district and appellate judges across the state on the bench Tuesday, according to unofficial returns at press time. Utah's judges are appointed by the governor, but periodically need more "yes" than "no" votes to stay on the job. All of those judges up for retention Tuesday kept their posts by ample margins of 75 percent or more yes votes. Among those retained were three of Utah's five Supreme Court justices, who stand for retention every 10 years. District court judges go on the ballot every six years. This year's election saw no organized attempts to remove a judge from office. In the last election, former judge David Young became the first state court judge to be ousted by voters. - Elizabeth Neff
