Another political issues committee has formed to lobby against the proposed marriage amendment. Utah Lawyers for Sound Constitutional Amendments filed paperwork with the state Elections Office last week, joining the Don't Amend Alliance as the two groups opposed to Amendment 3. Prominent Salt Lake City attorney Dan Berman is the chief financial officer of the new committee. State lawmakers placed the constitutional amendment on the Nov. 2 ballot to define traditional marriage and block the state from granting legal status to any other unions. Four committees support the amendment - the Constitutional Defense of Marriage Alliance, Traditional Marriage Crusade, Utahns for a Better Tomorrow and Yes for Marriage.
Honorary chairmen
Republican congressional candidate John Swallow has tapped two familiar Utah political names to be honorary chairmen for his campaign. Former Gov. Norm Bangerter and former U.S. Rep. Jim Hansen have signed on for the largely ceremonial roles.
Swallow is challenging two-term U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson in Utah's 2nd Congressional District.
