* Born Dec. 9, 1940, in Pueblo, Colo. Raised in Boise and Salt Lake County. When she was 10, her mother suffered a stroke, leaving Nancy as the caretaker of her brother and father, who was a Nash automobile dealer.

* Graduated from Olympus High School in Holladay.

* Attended the University of Utah, where she was on the swim team and even tried out for the football team. Earned a bachelor's degree in commercial art.

* Created the vocational school Salt Lake Academy of Design and started her own public relations firm.

* Married Reed Workman, owner of a construction company, in 1973 and became a stepmother to five children. She also became president and CEO for the couple's Aspen Creek Excavation and Workman Construction companies. Later, she and Reed had daughter Aisza.

Key dates in political career

* 1990: Ran for Salt Lake County recorder and lost to Katie Dixon.

* 1994: Won bid for Salt Lake County recorder.

* 1998: Won re-election as recorder.

* 2000: Won race to become Salt Lake County's first mayor, beating Democrat Karen Crompton.
