Rolly & Wells: Dance proposal fails: Was commissioner out to lunch?

Organizers of the Latino cultural festival scheduled for this weekend in Provo lost their third and last attempt to get approval for a family dance in Utah County facilities. Part of the reason: Gary Herbert, Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, had to boogie off to a GOP luncheon in New York City.

Herbert, who is still a Utah County commissioner despite his busy schedule as a candidate on the Jon Huntsman gubernatorial ticket, participated in part of Tuesday's commission meeting via a conference call while attending the Republican National Convention in Gotham. He had to sign off, however, so he wouldn't be late for a delegate luncheon.

When the Latino organizers again brought up the issue of the dance, which had failed to win approval at past meetings, Commissioner Steve White made the motion to approve it. Commissioner Jerry Grover, who has consistently opposed the dance plan, refused to second the motion and Herbert was no longer on the phone.

Striking out: Utah viewers who followed the Little League World Series for two weeks on ESPN missed out on the semi-finals and championship game Saturday and Sunday because the weekend coverage was switched to ABC.

KTVX, the Utah ABC affiliate, opted for local regularly scheduled network programs instead.

KTVX spokesperson Karen Zabriskie said in the past, ABC allowed the station to run the games on tape delay, but this year insisted they be aired live. That would have pre-empted ABC World News, the local news and local syndicated programs under contract.

Teaching by example? Salt Lake City Parking Services vehicle 18808, license number 85903, was spotted near 4th Avenue and N Street on Monday idling for 10 or 15 minutes about 15 feet from the curb in a bus zone, forcing the bus to go around it and stop in a precarious location to let off passengers, while the parking enforcer was writing a ticket to someone else for a parking violation.

Fun in the Big Apple: Apparently, Utah Republicans will do anything for a freebie.

The New York Times and Disney treated all the Republican delegates to a Broadway play and the Utah delegation was assigned the matinee production of "Aida." They also received red gift bags as well as the children's book Miffy Loves New York City and other goodies.

But while standing in line for the show, the Utahns were treated to a continuous loud and resounding "Go Home RNC" from protesters.

Meanwhile: Don Savage, alternate delegate from Utah County, unsuccessfully tried to give an LDS Church contact card to the delegation's College Republican host on the bus during the first day of the GOP National Convention.

Oops, forgot: If you are a disabled veteran, blind, elderly or a low-income property owner in Salt Lake County and didn't file your tax relief application today, don't panic.

What the county treasurer's office failed to notify you of in writing is that the deadline has been extended until Sept. 17.
