CEDAR CITY - Republican gubernatorial candidate Jon Huntsman promised that if he is elected, he will persuade two Fortune 500 companies to move their headquarters to Utah.

Democratic candidate Scott Matheson said that if he is elected, he will follow former Gov. Calvin Rampton's practice of spending at least one day each year in each county.

The two spoke Wednesday night at the Utah Rural Summit at Southern Utah University.

Both said the state should do more to market itself for tourists and favored economic development and the financial enrichment of the state.

Huntsman said he would take an organized approach to expanding the job market.

''I'm not a fan of growing in a willy-nilly way,'' Huntsman said. ''Every state has a unique competitive advantage. Do we know what ours is? We have to identify what we are good at as a state.''

Matheson encouraged cluster developments, based on geography, businesses, suppliers and educational institutions: ''We need to learn what industries are feasible for growth and we have to recognize the roles of schools and training programs in those clusters.''
