Vice President Dick Cheney will be in Utah on Wednesday to stump for John Swallow, Republican candidate for Utah's 2nd Congressional District seat.

The appearance is indicative of how important the 2nd District is to the Bush administration, said Swallow, who is challenging two-term Democrat Rep. Jim Matheson in a veritable horse race.

"President Bush needs this seat in Congress to help push his vision," Swallow said. "I'm pleased that [this race] has risen to the level that . . . the White House is sending out the vice president."

Cheney will speak at a $250 per-plate fund-raising luncheon at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City. The vice president is also scheduled to meet with Gov. Olene Walker and other Utah officials to discuss Utah and Western issues.
