Tooele » A woman was in critical condition and her husband was in jail after a Thursday afternoon shooting outside their home, police said.
The shooting occurred about 5:45 p.m. outside a two-story tan, stucco home at 181 W. 400 North, which is also the listed address of Jack's Electrical.
Tooele police Lt. Paul Wimmer said several people called 911 to report the sound of gunfire, and officers arrived to find the woman wounded in the driveway.
Police called inside the home and the woman's husband, Jack Vangrimbergen, surrendered a few moments later, Wimmer said. Police also recovered a handgun.
Wimmer said a helicopter took the woman to a Salt Lake City hospital.
An Intermountain Medical Center spokesman declined to release the woman's condition.
Vangrimbergen, 44, was booked Thursday night into Tooele County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and domestic violence in the presence of a child, Wimmer said.
Police used small, orange cones to mark about 12 spots on the Vangrimbergen's driveway as they collected evidence after the shooting. Wimmer said the woman was shot at least twice.
Elaine Burke, who lives two doors east of where the shooting occurred, said she and her husband were in their kitchen when they heard what sounded like several wood planks falling off the back of a truck outside.
Burke then said she looked out her window and saw Vangrimbergen's 11-year-old daughter, wearing only one shoe, pacing back and forth in the alley next to Burke's home.
Burke asked the girl if she was OK and she responded: "No, my dad just shot my mom," Burke said.
Burke took the girl inside her house where she gave her a glass of water. The girl was in shock and began crying before police arrived and took custody of her, Burke said.
She described the Vangrimbergens as "good people."
"We would have never expected [the shooting]," Burke said.
Wimmer said police had no previous reports of violence at the Vangrimbergen home.
Other neighbors also said they were unaware of the couple experiencing any problems.
