The Utah Senate welcomed Stuart Adams to its body on Wednesday, as the former legislator returned to the Capitol to fill the remainder of Lieutenant Governor Greg Bell's term in office.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to be able to serve," Adams said. "I absolutely feel very fortunate."

Adams edged out seven other Republican candidates seeking the seat, representing an area including Farmington, Layton and Fruit Heights. Adams who also takes Bell's place alphabetically as the first senator called on roll calls.

Gov. Gary Herbert and Bell were on hand to observe the ceremony.

Adams served in the House of Representatives from 2002 to 2006 and was a member of the Layton City Council for nine years prior to that.

Since 2007 he had served as chairman of the Utah Transportation Commission. Adams resigned from that position Wednesday morning. Herbert will pick his replacement.

The Senate also confirmed Edwin T. Peterson to be a judge in Utah's 8th District Court, which covers Daggett, Duchsene and Uintah counties. Peterson had been a deputy Uintah County attorney since 2001.
