A blaze in an abandoned house located an area plagued by suspicious fires last year has Ogden fire investigators scrambling today.

The house was fully ablaze, with flames coming out of the windows and doors, when firefighters were called to 1893 Childs Ave. about 10 p.m. Wednesday, said Ogden Deputy Fire Chief Chad Tucker. The structure was "pretty well destroyed," he said.

The fire is considered suspicious because it is an abandoned building, Tucker said, and recalls a series of apparent arsons in the same cluster of abandoned homes last summer and fall.

Up to nine fires broke out in abandoned houses near 300 East and 18th Street in August, September and October. Ninety abandoned homes there were purchased by the city government and slated for demolition, which has begun, to make room for a new development.

In October, 48-year-old Marianne Mancuso was arrested in connection with some of the fires. She is still at the Weber County jail, having been sentenced this month to another 90 days there for alcohol treatment.
