The Alameda - the National Center for Latino Arts and Culture - opens Tuesday in San Antonio. With 20,000 square feet of exhibition space, this new Smithsonian facility will be the largest Latino museum in the country. The Museo Alameda will present exhibitions, performances and educational programs exploring Latino art, history and culture. Planners expect 400,000 visitors a year to the first Smithsonian affiliate in the nation. The Museo Alameda is also associated with the Alameda Theater, which opened in 1949 and escaped the wrecking ball in 1995. The theater is being restored to its 1949 look and will seat 2,400 patrons. Affiliated with the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the venue will present theater, dance, music, film and television programming. For museum information, visit www.thealameda.org.
