WASHINGTON - Is traffic part of your annual summer vacation?

Chances are you're not alone. Popular destinations around the country experience traffic delays each summer as travelers head to their favorite beaches and parks.

A new report from the American Highway Users Alliance, AAA and TRIP, a national transportation research group, has identified the 25 summer destinations with the heaviest tourism-related traffic congestion.

The study identified the 10 most-congested areas as the Oregon Coast between Willamette Valley and the Pacific coastline; the Tidewater region of Virginia, I-64, including access to Williamsburg, Norfolk and Virginia Beach; routes serving the Maryland and Delaware shores, including the Chesapeake Bay Bridge; Branson, Mo.; North Carolina's Outer Banks; Cape Cod, Mass.; the New Jersey shore; Napa Valley, Calif.; Pennsylvania Dutch-Amish country; and the Catskill Mountains, N.Y.

The remaining 15 areas identified in the study were Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains and Lake Wallenpaupack area; Provo Canyon, in Utah; routes serving the Yosemite, Mammoth and Sierra Nevada mountains in California; Asheville, N.C.; Sun Valley, Idaho; Nevada's Lake Tahoe area; New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee area; Yellowstone National Park area; Pennsylvania's Presque Isle State Park area; Maine's Acadia National Park area; New Hampshire's White Mountains area; Lake George in upstate New York; South Carolina's Myrtle Beach area; Idaho's Whitewater region, including U.S. 93; and the Hamptons, in Long Island, N.Y.

The study did not include travel delays on roads leading to urban attractions like theme parks.

To minimize delays, drivers should avoid traveling at peak times like Friday and Sunday afternoons. Consider alternate routes; check local traffic information; and take mass transportation where available. Many summer destinations are served by private buses.
