Sept. 10 » Geology hike at Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, Escalante: Explore the park's unique geology, dating back 150 million years, on a guided hike to the Petrified Forest. Meet at the visitor center at 10 a.m.; 435-826-4466.

Sept. 11 and 16 » Bird watching at Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, Escalante: The park naturalist will help you identify birds by sight and sound. Binoculars and field guides are provided. Meet at the visitor center at 9 a.m.; 435-826-4466.

Sept. 12 » Full-moon hike at Goblin Valley State Park, Green River: Park staff will take you on a walk through the goblins to discover how a full moon changes the behavior of the park's animals. Meet at 8:30 p.m. at the Observation Point above the Valley of the Goblins; 435-564-3633.

Sept. 12 » Scorpion scouting at Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, Escalante: Track one of the desert's most famous creatures with a black light on this evening adventure. Meet at the visitor center at 8 p.m.; 435-826-4466.

Sept. 13 » Lime Canyon hike, Wasatch Mountain State Park, Midway: This is a four-hour moderate to difficult hike. Meet at 8 a.m. at the park visitor center; 435-654-1791.

Sept. 13 » Junior Ranger program and bat study, Goblin Valley State Park, Green River: How do predators and prey survive in Goblin Valley's harsh environment? Geared for children 6 to 12 who want to earn a Junior Ranger badge, but everyone is welcome. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Observation Point above the Valley of the Goblins. At 8:30 p.m., park staff will talk about bats and the role they play in the area's ecosystem. Meet at the amphitheater just past the campground; 435-564-3633.

Sept. 13 » Junior Ranger program on owls, Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, Escalante: Learn about owls through fun games and activities. Look inside a real owl pellet. Meet at the visitor center at 2 p.m.; 435-826-4466.

Sept. 13 and 20 » Tracks and scat at Dead Horse Point State Park, Moab: Meet at the visitor center amphitheater at 6:30 p.m. for a program on animals of the Colorado Plateau; 435-259-2614.
