Police have determined the identify of a man whose body was found on May 14 near Waterfall Canyon in Ogden.

Hikers found 20-year-old Joe Montes's body near the cliffs of the foothills, north of the trails rather than on any established path in the area, according to police.

His family recognized his hat — a navy blue Dallas Cowboys baseball hat with writing on the brim — which was publicized after it was found near the body, according to a news release from the Weber County Sheriff's Office. Detectives confirmed his identity from dental records.

Montes had recently moved to the Ogden area from Roosevelt, and investigators estimated the body had been in the foothills for at least six months, the release stated.

Investigators don't suspect foul play, said Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Matt Jensen. He said police believe Montes died as a result of exposure to the elements.
