A man driving south on 400 West downtown hit a pedestrian who was crossing near Pioneer Park at 300 South on Wednesday.

Lt. Robin Heiden, a spokeswoman for the Salt Lake City Police Department, said the man who was struck is in "serious to critical condition." His name hasn't been released.

A police officer at the scene said the pedestrian hit his head after being struck.

A man, who identified himself as the driver, was at the scene while Salt Lake City police investigated the crash at 6:45 p.m. He said the pedestrian walked into the street when the light was green and that he was distraught; he declined to comment further.

A sedan sat parked just past the crosswalk in the southbound left lane of 400 West with a crack on the driver's side of the windshield.
