Crews in Hurricane worked for more than eight hours Sunday to free a Jack Russell terrier trapped underground, police say.

The dog fell in a hole about six to eight feet deep near Quail Creek Ranch when walking with her owners at 11 a.m., according to a news release from Hurricane City Police Department.

City animal control attempted to coax the dog out with a pole, but she remained stuck, the release states. Family members and responding officers also tried to dig around the area to give the dog more space, but they couldn't move several large rocks.

The Washington County Water Conservancy District, which owns the property, used a backhoe to create a larger opening, the release said. A search and rescue team then sent a member down into the hole to grab the dog.

Craig Davis, the dog's owner, described the hole as "no bigger than a steering wheel," the release states.
