A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 15 near Spanish Fork early Saturday killed one person and seriously injured two.

The Utah Highway Patrol identified the deceased as 21-year-old Irineo Hernandez Ambriz from Provo.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Jared Cornia said the 3:42 a.m. accident, near mile marker 256 on southbound I-15, involved a semi-trailer rig traveling south, a compact car and a pickup truck.

A witness told troopers the car and pickup truck "were both traveling at a high rate of speed and began passing the semi on the left," Cornia said. The car then may have cut off the semi as it pulled in front, since the big rig suddenly swerved off the road to the right.

After taking out about 100 feet of guard rail, the semi re-entered the road and collided with the pickup truck. Ambriz, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the pickup, sustained fatal injuries, while the drivers of the pickup and the semi were transported to the hospital.

The driver of the small car was unhurt. An investigation into the accident was underway Saturday, Cornia said.

The southbound lanes of I-15 at the accident scene were closed for more than five hours while wreckage was cleared.
