West Valley City police are investigating a shooting Saturday evening that left a man in critical condition.

About 5:25 p.m., the 31-year-old man walked into a smoke shop near 4600 S. 4000 West and "basically collapsed on the floor," said West Valley City Police Lt. Dalin Taylor. He was still conscious and said that he had been shot, Taylor added.

Police arrived and found that he had been shot once in the back. The man was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but was later downgraded to critical condition, Taylor said.

Police have not learned much from the man about the shooting, except that it occurred "somewhere in the area," Taylor said.
