Louisville, Ky. • With the exception of BYU's men's team, the state's cross country teams performed about as expected at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Tom Sawyer State Park.

Ranked as high as No. 3 this season and having entered the meet with a No. 6 ranking, the BYU men finished 12th. The Cougars' highest finisher was Dallin Farnsworth, who placed 74th.

Southern Utah's men finished 21st in a meet that was won by Syracuse, which upset No. 1-ranked Colorado. SUU's Hayden Hawks earned All-American status by finishing 35th individually.

"He put his mind to it and did the work we needed him to do and he's awarded now with one of the All-American spots," SUU coach Eric Houle said. "That's something he and the rest of the team will remember for a long time to come."

Mike Tate was the second-fastest finisher for SUU, running a 30:46.8, which placed him in 78th place individually. Ibrahim Ahmed finished third for SUU and 142nd overall with a 31:19.5.

In the women's race, No. 25-ranked Weber State edged out BYU and Utah. The Big Sky champion Wildcats finished 22nd, while BYU was 23rd and Utah was 26th. New Mexico won the women's title.

"The girls ran a really great race today and to finish 22nd in the country is an outstanding accomplishment," said Weber State head coach Paul Pilkington. "Our top runners really ran well and Hailey [Whetten] led the way. She was just 10 seconds away from being an All-American. This has been a great year for us and today was a fantastic way to end the season."

Whetten finished 64th overall with a time of 20:37.6 on the 6K course.

For BYU, top runner Natalie Shields-Connolly lost a shoe early in the race and finished 137th. The Cougars' top finisher was Carrie Jube, who placed 99th.

For Utah, sophomore Hannah McInturff finished in 104th place.

"We were hoping to finish a little higher, but our kids gave great efforts today," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We have had just an incredible year. These kids have taken this program to a height that we have never reached before. We know that we didn't have our best day today, but I thought our seniors particularly ran well today. All of our girls ran as hard as they could."

McInturff, a Pocatello, Idaho, native, finished with a time of 20:51.3 to lead the Utes. Sophomore Sarah Feeny (166th), senior Susannah Hurst (166th), Andrea Chavez (173rd) and senior Jocelyn Todd (190th) also added to Utah's score.
