Cache County authorities on Monday identified the 10-year-old killed in a weekend hunting-related accident as Zachary Woodruff of Smithfield.

The Cache County Sheriff's Office released Woodruff's name in a news release, but said no additional details would be provided as the Monte Cristo Mountain Range incident remains under investigation.

The shooting occurred about 7:30 p.m. Saturday about one miles southeast of Red Spur Mountain, the sheriff's office has said.

Woodruff was reportedly sitting on the floorboard of a four-wheel ATV, trying to stay warm and out of the wind, when an adult hunting companion pulled up next to his vehicle.

As the man got out of his own four-wheeler and was removing his rifle from its front seat, the weapon discharged, striking the boy, police have said.

The sheriff's office has not specified where the bullet struck the boy. Deputies and paramedics were unable to revive the child, who was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after a Life Flight medical helicopter.

No charges are expected as investigators' preliminary findings were that the death was an accident.
