An elderly Logan man drowned in a weekend kayaking accident on northern Utah's Cutler Reservoir.

Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Peterson said the victim and his wife were paddling about a mile northwest of the boat dock about 11 a.m. on Sunday when they both fell into the water. The wife managed to hang onto one of the kayaks while her husband attempted to swim to shore.

At first, the couple, neither of them wearing life jackets, kept in contact by shouting out to each other, but when the man went silent a few minutes later, his wife swam in search and found him floating face-down.

She was able to call 911 for help, and sheriff's deputies soon responded, along with paramedics. The victim was unresponsive and later declared dead at Logan Regional Hospital.

The incident remained under investigation on Monday.

The identities of the couple were being withheld pending notification of family.
