A man lost his legs in an industrial accident Friday evening on his first day at a Juab County dogfood plant.

The 32-year-old man was working on an auger at the plant, in the town of Mills, when his legs became tangled in the machine, said Allan Taylor, Juab County sheriff's chief deputy.

"Both of the man's legs were amputated above the knee," according to a release from the sheriff's office.

He was able to pull himself out and call for help from his co-workers, who slowed the bleeding with tourniquets, Taylor said. The emergency medical technicians who showed up soon after credit the co-workers with saving the man's life.

A medical helicopter flew him to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in extremely critical condition. He is expected to survive, Taylor said.

Deputies were still investigating the accident.
