A 3-year-old girl was killed and her 2-year-old brother was critically injured Thursday afternoon in a crash in West Valley City.

Police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said the children's mother was driving an SUV north on Redwood Road and was turning left onto Research Way, at about 2700 South, when a southbound sedan hit her vehicle on the side.

The vehicle flipped on its side, and the girl, who was ejected, died at the scene, police said. A helicopter that was to take her to a hospital was called off.

The boy was transported by ambulance to a hospital with serious injuries to his leg.

The girl was identified as Paisley Hayden, daughter of 23-year-old Carolyn Hughes, who was driving the SUV.

The SUV was carrying eight children from multiple families, and police said it appears no one in that vehicle was restrained.

The sedan's 21-year-old driver, who was in a seat belt, suffered a broken arm, police said.

Redwood Road was closed from 2500 South to 2700 South until about 8:30 p.m., police said. They said the TRAX green line had been disrupted.
