A man was critically injured and his female passenger seriously hurt in a weekend head-on collision on State Route 9 near the southern Utah community of Rockville.

The Utah Highway Patrol said the accident occurred when an eastbound Ford Taurus, driving by a 16-year-old male from Hurricane, attempted to pass an RV at 3:48 p.m. Sunday. It crashed into a westbound Plymouth Prowler, driven by 51-year-old Timothy Chard, of Washington City.

Chard, critically injured, was flown by helicopter to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George. His passenger, 34-year-old Erin Chard, also of Washington City, was taken to DRMC by ambulance in serious condition.

The teenage driver of the Taurus, along with three passengers 16, 18 and 20 years old, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

UHP said all involved in the accident were wearing seat belts. Air bags deployed in both vehicles.

The investigation into the crash continued Monday, but troopers indicated drugs or alcohol were not believed to have been factors.
