Murray police confirmed Wednesday that they had arrested one of two suspects in an armed robbery and shooting that left a convenience store clerk dead last month.

Police spokesman Kenny Bass credited numerous tips, along with fingerprints recovered from the crime scene, for the Tuesday night arrest of Alexis Alan Garcia, 20.

Garcia, a Mexican national, was taken into custody at his home in South Salt Lake by Murray detectives about 6 p.m. He was then booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of first-degree felony murder and aggravated robbery counts, as well as numerous DUI, traffic and weapons related misdemeanors.

Police continued to look for a second suspect in the March 18 holdup of the Lee Mart, at 5905 S. 700 West, that mortally wounded 62-year-old clerk David Marsh.

Moments after the 6 a.m. shooting, arriving customers became suspicious when they arrived to discover an empty cash register tray in an aisle. They then found the bloodied Marsh on the floor behind the counter.

Video from a security camera show two young male suspects, their faces obscured by red bandanas and wearing dark hooded sweatshirts. Both carried handguns as they ran into the store and demanded money from Marsh.

He complied, but is thought to have thrown the cash register tray at them as they fled. That apparently is when one of the suspects turned and shot him in the chest with a .22-caliber handgun.

A probable cause statement notes that .22-caliber rounds and clothing that matched that of one of the suspects, as captured on store security cameras, were found in Garcia's residence.

Anyone with information on the remaining suspect in this case is asked to call Murray police at 801-840-4000.
