South Jordan Police Chief Lindsay Shepherd has announced his retirement, effective May 1.

City Manager Gary Whatcott said Shepherd, who has served at the head of the police department for 16 years, will be temporarily replaced by Lt. Jason Knight. Knight will run the department as interim chief until the city council finds a replacement.

"I worked with Lindsay for 25 years and know of his dedication to his profession. He has always strived to be the best he could be and instilled his love for law enforcement into all who served with him," Whatcott stated Tuesday. "His contributions to this organization have been many and will not be soon forgotten."

Shepherd, then a reserve police officer in Draper, went to work as a patrol officer for South Jordan in 1984. He was promoted through the ranks in the ensuing years, culminating in his appointment as chief in 1999.

"It's been an honor and privilege to serve and protect the citizens of South Jordan City with police officers and support staff," Shepherd said. "Now is the right time for me to move on to the next stage of my life. I look forward to spending more time with my family."
