A fiery crash on northbound Interstate 15 near 7200 South on Monday claimed the life of a 37-year-old from West Valley City.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Jeff Nigbur said the accident occurred at about 2 p.m. when a northbound Honda Civic traveling in one of the right-hand lanes swerved all the way across the freeway and crashed head-on into the left-side concrete barrier.

The car then spun into the HOV lane, where it burst into flames, Nigbur said.

Seconds later, an SUV then crashed into the Honda.

A passerby pulled Antonio Lopez, the sole male occupant, from the burning Honda, but he was dead at the scene, Nigbur said.

It was not known what caused the driver to swerve across the freeway, Nigbur said.

The accident caused the closure of the left three lanes of the freeway for about three hours, causing northbound traffic to back up for about five miles.
