There may have been four teams competing in the Huntsman Center on Friday, but clearly, the No. 4 Utah Utes were in a league of their own.

After opening the night with just a 49.125 on the vault, the Utes roared to life, then roared past the competition to score a 196.675 in front of 14,254 fans.

SUU posted 195.5 to finish second while its Mountain Rim Conference rival Boise State was third with a 194.525 and UC Davis was fourth with a 193.95.

While Utah's vault score was good enough to give it the early lead, Utah failed to post a 9.9 or higher.

For comparison, last year the only meet in which the Utes didn't have a 9.9 or higher was at the NCAA regionals.

But the Utes were above average the rest of the night, posting 49.225 on the uneven bars, going 6-for-6 on the balance beam for a 49.075 and finishing with 49.25 on floor.

It was a solid showing for the Utes, who didn't have to count a fall. The only major mistake was a fall by Baely Rowe from the uneven bars, but that mistake was negligible thanks to the strong efforts that followed.

Kassandra Lopez and Corrie Lothrop both scored 9.875s and Georgia Dabritz, who won the all-around, scored 9.925.

"That shows we can come back and rally after someone makes a mistake," Lothrop said. "We aren't going to let one mistake affect us and we are going to control what we do."

While happy with the effort, Utah coach Greg Marsden said he still sees plenty of room for improvement.

"Like last week, there were some really high points," he said. "But since it was the second meet of the season and we'd been through one and gotten the nerves and jitters out, I guess I was expecting a little more."

Marsden was clearly thinking ahead to next week when the Utes host Pac-12 rival UCLA.

"There wasn't anything to be upset about but we have to get much better, quickly, as we get into the Pac-12 schedule," he said. "We have to clean up some things and be more aggressive and make things look easier for us than we did tonight."

The Utes easily won the meet, but SUU was impressive in its second-place showing too. The T-Birds' score was highlighted by a 49.225 on the vault.

Leading SUU's effort was Stacie Webb with a 9.875 to win the event.

"We had some really good vaults and it was nice to see that after a floor that was just mediocre," SUU coach Scott Bauman said. "But this is a tough place to compete so I couldn't be happier."

That the T-Birds beat the Broncos was a huge boost of confidence, considering SUU was picked third in the conference preseason poll behind Boise State and Denver.

"I was really proud of the way they kept fighting," Bauman said. "But we can always do better in our routines." —
