Icy road conditions and unsafe speed were blamed for a fatal multi-vehicle accident late Monday night on Interstate 80 near Salt Lake City's Foothill Boulevard.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said that just before 11 p.m. Monday, two vehicles slid off the snowpacked, east Salt Lake bench section of the westbound lanes of the freeway. A motorist driving an SUV stopped to help, parking on the right shoulder, and moments later an out-of-control Acura sedan slammed into the SUV.

The driver of the Acura, a male in his late-50s, died at the scene. His name was being withheld Tuesday pending notification of next of kin.

No other injuries were reported.

Royce said UHP appreciates the willingness of people to help, but generally stopping at an accident scene is not a good idea.

"Especially in inclement weather, stopping like that on the side of the road is very dangerous," he said. "It's better to call us and drive on, we'll get troopers and tow trucks there as soon as we can."
