For the second time in less than a week, someone has been shot in a hunting accident at the Sportsman's Paradise Hunting Club west of Paradise, the Cache County Sheriff's Office said Saturday.

Lt. Mike Peterson said a hunting guide for the club was leading a four-member group from the Willard area on Saturday when one of them, a 12-year-old, fired a 20-gauge shotgun at a pheasant from the opposite side of the trees. He said the guide, Christopher T. Richards, was struck in his head and neck by six to 8 pellets from the shot.

Richards, 24, of Willard, remained conscious after the incident and was transported from the field to the hunting club's lodge, where he was met by emergency crews. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was stabilized, and then airlifted to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. Peterson said in a news release that Richards' injuries are not considered life-threatening but they will require surgery.

On Tuesday, 57-year-old Norman E. Newbold, of Syracuse, was fatally injured when a hunting companion slipped in the mud and accidentally fired his shotgun, striking him in the back. Newbold, who was hunting at Sportsman's Paradise with three friends from Davis County, was taken to Logan Regional Hospital, where he died about an hour later.

All the evidence in the Newbold shooting indicated it was a tragic accident, according to Peterson.

The Saturday shooting is being investigated as an accident and no criminal charges are being considered at this time, he said.
