A bicyclist was hit and killed by a freight train early Tuesday morning in Woods Cross.

Jesse Western, a 48-year-old Woods Cross resident, was struck at about 5:45 a.m. near 1500 S. 900 West, according to police officials.

The bicyclist went around the railroad crossing arms while they were down, Det. Chris Hoffman said, and was struck by a Union Pacific freight train.

"It appears he tried to get through, tried to make it through without getting struck," Hoffman said. "He wasn't able to."

Hoffman said there was no equipment malfunctions, and that the lights were flashing and the railroad crossing arms were down when Western attempted to cross the tracks. He was deceased when officers arrived.

The bicyclist had gone to a convenience store early in the morning and was heading back to his home before the accident, according to Hoffman.

The accident temporarily closed several nearby streets early Tuesday and delayed FrontRunner trains.
