If you're into hard rock, you probably know Maynard James Keenan, frontman for the alt-metal band Tool and the supergroup A Perfect Circle (plus his arty side project, Puscifer).
What you may not know -- and what the fun and frisky documentary "Blood Into Wine" shows you -- is that Keenan has another artistic outlet: making wine in northern Arizona.
Keenan is serious about his winemaking, teaming up with winemaker Eric Glomski to start producing wines at AZ Stronghold Vineyards about 50 miles southwest of Flagstaff. (Glomski also owns his own winery, Page Springs Vineyards and Cellars.) As the movie shows Keenan and Glomski working through an entire growing season -- from planting through harvest to processing the grapes -- we see the love and care they have for this work.
Filmmakers Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke reveal not only the inner workings of winemaking, but the specific challenges Keenan and Glomski face launching their label. Wine experts are resistant to the notion of wine coming out of Arizona, and some question if Keenan's wine is just another rock-star vanity project.
The movie is shaggy and disorganized, relying on appearances by Keenan's celebrity friends -- like comic Patton Oswalt and actress Milla Jovovich (who has been a singer in Puscifer) -- to goose audience interest. There's also a running gag in which Keenan endures being hectored by two obnoxious talk-show hosts (played by Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, the guys from Adult Swim's "Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!"), that goes on long after the one joke's humor is exhausted.
Through the clutter, though, "Blood Into Wine" shows how seriously Keenan takes wine -- and how seriously wine snobs and music lovers should take Keenan.
