Shopping: A store with just children in mind

Jon and Aimee Levy decided to take the childish route when looking for a new venture and a life in Utah.

That's My Room is their baby, a locally owned and operated children's furniture store, specializing in post-crib bedrooms.

"We wanted to do something that brought us closer to the community in Utah and so we started brainstorming about what was needed or what Utah lacked," Jon said. "Utah has a lot of kids so we just started going in that direction."

Jon, 34, a former owner of a software company he ran from home, and Aimee, 31, a physical therapist, began to research their new venture a year ago.

"We are kind of big kids ourselves, so that was it," said Jon, adding that his wife came up with the store's name.

That's My Room offers everything from beds to large stuffed animals to drawer handles, all with children in mind. The amount of child-oriented furniture that was on the market was overwhelming, so the research took some time. They narrowed the list to a handful of brands based on high-quality and uniqueness; customers order after looking at catalogs from such brands as Atlantic Furniture, Berg Furniture, Tradewins, Kidkraft, Lea and Jonti-Craft.

The Levys originally considered opening the store in Park City but found it was too expensive and figured there would be a bigger clientele in Salt Lake City.

The Levy's have no other employees. They do everything -- consultations, deliveries and installations. "We want to supply quality products at a reasonable price," Jon Levy said.

In addition to being locally owned, the Levys sell items by local artists who make pillows, drawer handles and wall art, among other items. The store also contracts with three artists to do murals for clients.

Other available items include books, interactive rugs, globes, stuffed animals of all sizes, puppets and toys that encourage cognitive development in children.

"The goal is to be a positive part of the community, providing quality products at reasonable prices backed by impeccable costumer service," Jon Levy said. "We don't want to take from the community. We are not here to make a load of money."

The couple say they work from 90 to 100 hours a week between the store and their second jobs working in a bar.

"We've never worked so hard in our lives. It is what it is and we love our store," Jon Levy said.
