Dyson's new fan does away with blades

Dyson, the company behind those amazing but expensive vacuum cleaners, has invented a new kind of fan. The bladeless device looks like a giant hi-tech bubble wand and puts out an uninterrupted stream of smooth "amplified" air.

How does it work? A motor draws in air from behind the fan, accelerating it over an airfoil shaped ramp, much like the wing of an airplane. That channels the direction of the air, drawing more air behind and around the fan into the airflow, amplifying it up to 15 times.

Why is it better than my current fan? The airflow is smooth rather than choppy, meaning you have a consistent breeze. Because the fan has no blades, it is safe and easy to clean.

How much does it cost? Ah, there's the rub. The 12-inch model is $329.99 and the 10-inch model is $299.99. That's about 10 times the cost of a similar sized traditional fan.

Where can I buy one? There are no retailers signed on yet in Utah, but you can purchase from www.dyson.com once production ramps up.
