Travel tips: Put kids' safety on your holiday travel list

Consider the safety of children when traveling during the holidays. Alison Rhodes, who calls herself "The Safety Mom," has a Web site, www.safetymom.com, with suggestions for holiday travel with kids. Among them:

» Make certain children sit in age-appropriate car seats positioned with a seat belt that is secure and snug. A device called the SeatSnug -- www.seatsnug.com -- can effectively secure the seat belt for children and adults. Put a neon sticker with important contact information on the car seat so emergency workers can assist if you have been rendered unconscious.

» When flying, put children in an FAA-approved restraint system and not on your lap.

» Label kids by creating a tag with your cell-phone number and the name of the hotel where you are staying. List any medical information as well. Consider taping this to the inside of a child's shoe.

» Plan ahead when traveling to know the name of a local pediatrician as well as a pharmacy, and create a small first-aid kit to take with you.
